Medical colleges in india

India is home to some world class medical colleges. These colleges offer various courses in medical science, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students may go for various degrees like MBBS, MS, BDS, MD, MDS etc.

Majority of the medical colleges were established in the 50s & 60s by the state and the central government. But since 1980s many private colleges emerged all across India. The quality and the standard of the medical institutes are looked after by Medical Council of India. The body has presently recognized 273 Indian medical schools which has the total capacity to educate 31298 students.

There are various undergraduate and post graduate medical courses. The undergraduate medical program is known as MBBS and there are various post graduate programs offered are MD (in Medicine and Medicine-related disciplines like Dermatology), MS (in Obstetrics and Gynecology), MS (in Surgery and Surgery-related disciplines like E.N.T.,) M.Ch (in Cardiothoracic Surgery). Besides this there are also many diploma courses like DGO (Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology). The various specializations sought by students in different levels are as follows.

Some of the states producing the maximum number of medical students, both MBBS and PG, every year are Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh, WestBengal. India has more than 2500 MBBS seats and above 1500 PG seats. India is one of the top-most countries having a huge number of medical colleges. According to the International Medical Education Quarterly Volume 1, No. 1 Spring 2003, India is the country with maximum number of medical colleges as depicted in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED)
